Colocasia esculenta 'fontanesii'
This is an old favourite with dark stems and true elephant shaped leaves with dark veins. Hardier than others, this has nice heart-shaped green leaves with purple blood red tones. Likes part shade, lots of water, food and warmth. Easy to grow, frost hardy to - 5 to - 10 with mulch in well-drained soils. Large Fragrant flower also emerges in late summer.
Grow in humus-rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full/ part sun. Choose a warm position sheltered from cold winds and give a deep winter mulch. In hard frosts lift the rhizomes and store somewhere dry until spring. An alternative is to grow it in a large container on a warm, sunny patio and to overwinter indoors or under glass.
