Greyia sutherlandii (Natal Bottlebrush)
A striking, deciduous to semi-deciduous small tree or large shrub, Greyia sutherlandii is native to South Africa. It is highly prized for its spectacular floral display, typically appearing in late winter to early spring before or with the new leaves. The inflorescences are dense, terminal racemes of vibrant, coral-red to scarlet flowers, superficially resembling a bottlebrush, hence its common name. Individual flowers are cup-shaped with prominent stamens. The leaves are large, broadly ovate to nearly circular, with a cordate base and a serrated margin, often turning attractive shades of red or orange in autumn. The bark is smooth and greyish, becoming more fissured with age. This species is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardens in suitable climates.
