Among the most resplendent of hedychiums, award-winning Hedychium 'Tara' (Ginger Lily) is an upright herbaceous perennial boasting large and dense racemes, up to 10 in. long (25 cm), packed with fragrant orange flowers in late summer and early fall. Suitable for USDA zones 8 to 11, the plant will survive light frosts but must be dug up and stored somewhere dry when hard winter frosts bed in. Supplied as an established small plant in a 0.5ltr pot - 11cm.
Grow in humus-rich, fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full/ part sun. Choose a warm position sheltered from cold winds and give a deep winter mulch. In hard frosts lift the rhizomes and store somewhere dry until spring. An alternative is to grow it in a large container on a warm, sunny patio and to overwinter indoors or under glass.
